AMOAutomatic Motor Optimizer
A well-known problem is that harmonics and voltage spikes from the drive create a wide range of problems, reduce the motor efficiency, and drastically shorten the expected lifetime for motors. Due to these problems, the motor power cable cannot typically exceed 30 meters which have been a big challenge for electrical design of ships and other complex installations. With the Automatic Motor Optimizer installed this is no longer a requirement. AMO reduces harmonics and transient voltage spikes from the drive causing noise between the variable speed drive and motor, and during tests, motor power systems have been confirmed to operate reliably to more than 300 meters with the AMO connected.
AMO also extends motor life by balancing and stabilizing voltages with respect to ground, causing the voltages to be brought back in balance which corrects the voltages to allow the drives and control system to operate reliably.
Electric motors with a 4% voltage imbalance run 25% hotter. Every additional 7½ degrees Celsius a motor runs in excess of its rating cuts the motor life in half. With the AMO installed, electric motor life is increased by more than double. AMO balances the voltages, reduces the harmonics that cause heat in motors and prevents transient voltage spikes and this makes it easier for the motor to run cooler and use less energy (watts or true power), reduce the volt-amp draw (apparent power), reduce the VAR power (imaginary power) and increase the power factor. The energy savings alone will typically deliver a payback in one year or less.
