AVE

The AVE is based on EM Energy Solutions’ revolutionary technology of using electromagnetism to balance and optimize the distribution system at the speed of the current. AVE is designed for an optimal phase to ground voltage control and mitigation of transient overvoltages. With the use of motor-controlled variable isolation transformers, accurate control of individual phase voltage is possible. With the AVE technology installed, your electrical system will be protected against damaging voltage transients.

Conventional surge protection devices are too slow to react to transient overvoltages, and often let through 4-5 times nominal voltage

Operation modes

Voltage balancing mode – Phase to ground voltage control from close to 100 percent (fault condition) to within 1 percent imbalance.

Transient protection mode – The AVE will protect electrical equipment from damaging transient overvoltages

Customer benefits

  • Increased life expectancy of electrical equipment
  • Reduced maintenance and downtime
  • Cost savings
  • Increased personnel safety
  • Reduced carbon footprint
  • Increased production output
  • Cost effective solution

Industry Challenge

Today’s use of electronics and power electronics is setting higher demands for power quality. Industry is experiencing considerable costs in terms of increased power bills, reduced operational lifetime, and damage to electrical equipment. Issues facing industrial accounts as well as residential are adversely affected by voltage imbalances, transient voltage surges and harmonics. These voltage anomalies cause premature failure of electrical equipment, electrical costs increase, and increases in carbon emissions. Imbalanced voltages can be caused by loading at the plant or from the Utility service, which will cause premature failure of components and higher operating costs.

These are large and expensive problems in industry. Electric motors will operate at higher temperatures and lower efficiency, which results in significantly reduced life expectancy and increased power consumption.

Technology

EM Energy Solutions’ revolutionary patented technology for voltage stabilizing ensures an optimal phase voltage balance on both grounded and ungrounded distribution systems.

AVE is an AHRGS (Automated High Resistance Grounding System) that reacts to any voltage imbalance and equalizes the voltage between all phases with the speed of the current.

By constantly logging the supply transformers’ phase to ground voltages and using this to control single-phase variable or multi tap transformers, one can achieve optimal phase voltage balance. A state-of-the-art controller controls the variable transformers. The system has an operator panel for control functions and display of operational status together with a comprehensive alarm system that will notify operators about various events like ground faults, transients, and high harmonic distortions.

Case Studies

Pictures show AVE installed at Samsung Heavy Industries to optimize power quality at one of their robotic welding factories inside the shipyard. The low power quality directly impacted the welding quality, which resulted in increased arc-flare, blowholes, and other welding-related issues.

A significant welding quality improvement occurred the instant that the AVE was activated. The arc-flare was noticeably shorter, and the operators reported that even the machine’s sound was different. In addition to greatly improved welding quality, Samsung Heavy Industries will, from now on, also benefit from reduced energy consumption, an extended lifetime of machines and components such as welding inverters, and a more reliable, cost-efficient, and safe electrical system.

Welding inverters operate at switching frequencies, typically 10 kHz or higher, and AVE is the only system capable of suppressing and stabilizing the voltage system at these frequencies due to its unique technology!

Applications

The AVE is designed for use in a wide range of industries. With AVE installed, all types of three-phase power systems are optimized and protected. Each power transformer requires one AVE. The AVE provides transient voltage spike protection, arcing ground fault protection, phase voltage balancing, and arc flash mitigation. Cost and energy saving by installing AVE typically has a payback time in one year or less.

AVE Models

The AVE comes in five different model types in various sizes depending on transformer size, voltage class, type of installation and available space for installation

AVE

The AVE is based on EM Energy Solutions’ revolutionary technology of using electromagnetism to balance and optimize the distribution system at the speed of the current. AVE is designed for an optimal phase to ground voltage control and mitigation of transient overvoltages. With the use of motor controlled variable isolation transformers, accurate control of individual phase voltage is possible.

AVE FIXED

AVE Fixed is a more cost-friendly solution but can still pack a punch. It uses fixed high-quality isolation transformers with PLC controlled variable tapping, which makes an instantaneous correction to any phase voltage imbalance. Any steady-state voltage imbalances will be corrected with the variable tapping functionality, making it capable of correcting a 100% voltage imbalance (fault condition).

AVE MINI

AVE mini is a more cost and space-effective solution for lower range transformers between 400 and 1200 kVA. The same electromagnetic principles as used on the standard AVE are applied. The compact design reduces the challenge in terms of available space. It is fitted with high quality single-phase transformers utilizing controller regulated variable tapping to achieve voltage balancing to a high degree of accuracy. The unit has the integrated power quality meter as optional. The operator can obtain necessary system information from the HMI panel located in the front door. AVE mini also comes in single-phase solutions, making it suitable for smaller housing areas.
